Minimum viable product (MVP)

The simplest version of a product that real customers can use, built to test demand and the core benefit with the smallest possible investment.

What is a minimum viable product (MVP)?

A minimum viable product (MVP) is the simplest version of a product that already delivers the core benefit and can be tried out in real use. Its purpose is not to sell as many units as possible but to find out, with minimal investment, whether the product solves a real problem and whether customers will pay for it. The term comes from the startup world and was popularized by the lean startup method, but it works just as well for physical products.

For hardware, an MVP usually means a small batch of working units (typically a handful to a few dozen) built without production tooling: 3D printed, CNC machined or made from laser-cut and bent sheet metal, with off-the-shelf modules and standard components. For a new workshop clamping fixture, for example, the MVP might be a welded frame, machined functional parts and purchased toggle clamps, with no injection-molded covers and no cost optimization.

An MVP differs from neighboring development steps in the question it answers. A proof of concept shows that the technical principle works at all. A functional prototype verifies the design and its behavior in testing. An MVP tests the value to the customer in everyday use, and pilot production finally verifies the manufacturing process. One physical unit can serve several of these purposes, but it should always be clear which question it is meant to answer.

Minimum means a limited feature set, not low quality. The core function must work reliably throughout the test, the product must be safe, and there must be a way to learn how it is actually used (interviews, logged operating data, service reports). Secondary features, variants, final surface finishes and cost optimization can be left out.

When to use it

An MVP makes sense when it is unclear whether there is demand, which features customers will really use or how much they will pay, while series production would require a large investment in molds and tooling. Typical cases are new consumer products, equipment for a new market segment and B2B products that can be deployed with one or a few pilot customers. Results from MVP field use are also strong evidence for investors, grant applications or crowdfunding.

An MVP adds less where the requirements are clear from the start and set by the customer, such as a part made to specification or a replacement part. For heavily regulated products (medical devices, pressure equipment) there is little room for simplification, because regulations also define the minimum scope.

What to watch out for

A common mistake is an MVP that is too polished: development takes months, a mold is ordered, and only then does it turn out that customers want something else. The opposite mistake is an MVP so unreliable or awkward that customers reject the product for its execution, not its idea. Before building, write down which hypotheses the MVP tests, how you will measure them and which result means continue, pivot or stop.

Expect a design built with prototyping processes to need rework for series production (DFM, production materials and processes) and validation again. Customers also perceive a 3D printed part differently from a final molded part, so separate feedback on function from feedback on finish. If you sell the MVP or hand it to customers for everyday use, it must meet the same safety requirements as the production product, including CE marking where it applies. A small quantity does not change that.
